Infants (3-6 years)

The Infant Department is split into two separate stages: Early Years Foundation Stage (Nursery/1º Ed. Infantil and Reception/2º Ed. Infantil) and Key Stage One (Year One/3º Ed. Infantil and Year Two/1º Ed. Primaria).

Early Years Foundation Stage (3 – 5 years)

Children are listening and learning in English from the moment they begin their learning experience in school.

In the Early Years Foundation Stage children learn through structured play and small group supported learning.

The areas of learning at this stage are:

  • Personal, Social & Emotional Development
  • Communication, Language & Literacy (English and Spanish)
  • Problem Solving, Reasoning & Numeracy
  • Knowledge & Understanding of the World
  • Creative Development
  • Physical Development

In the Nursery setting, each of the three classes is led by the tutor and two teaching assistants. Children in this year group work indoors and outdoors to extend all aspects of their personal, social and cognitive development. Learning is practical, fun and aims to stretch each child’s knowledge as well as the use of both languages.

In Reception, children begin to read. The teaching team use the Jolly Phonics reading approach, supported by Synthetic Phonix cubes and the Oxford Reading Tree scheme to develop English reading skills. Classes are led by the tutor and the teaching assistant, who continue to work with small groups to focus on individualized learning, as well as extending opportunities for supervised independent learning, in preparation for the next stage of the curriculum.
